10 Must Read Christmas Books
Do you love Christmas? I do! Everything from the gift wrapping, to the decorations, the Christmas Pageants, and lots of holiday baking. I love it all! One part of Christmas that has always held such a special place in my heart is the reading of Christmas books. I remember from a very young age, sitting on my grandmother’s lap as she would read wonderful stories to me, from silly to serious, and everything in between.
As we have moved on to the electronic age, and so many Christmas Traditions are now passed on through TV, Video, and Movie. Those are all great ways of passing on stories and traditions, but I think there is something so special about gathering around, crawling up in someone’s lap, and having a Christmas Story read out loud. So, without further adieu, here are 10 Must Read Christmas Books that you should share with your family this year.
1 Twas the Night Before Christmas
This is the classic written by Clement Moore. I remember hearing these words over and over as a child as each year my grandparents would read this story to us with great character in their voices. Then, I would read it to my children, and now of course my grandchildren. It is a wonderful story with beautiful descriptions of the night before Christmas, and all of the wonderful delights of the night to come. I highly recommend this story not just for it’s classic nature, but because it is written in such a wonderful poetic way.
2 Jesus’ Christmas Party
I simply love this storybook! It is not typical as it is written from the viewpoint of the grumpy Innkeeper. Which makes it such a great point of view. It has some very comical parts, but clearly communicates the story. I have read this to many a child at home and at Sunday School and it is a perennial favorite which always brings laughs while sharing such an important story.
3 The Joy of Giving
The Berenstain Bears and the Joy of Giving is a wonderful story to remind everyone about the Joy of Giving. Everyone goes through times in life where receiving seems a little better than giving. Of course it is the opposite, but sometimes we need reminding. I love how this story crafts reminders about how important it is to focus on the Joy of Giving. Our family has always enjoyed the Berenstain Bear Books as they teach such valuable lessons in an entertaining manner. It is easy even for young children to connect with the characters, and be able to apply the lessons to their own lives.
4 Skipping Christmas
Skipping Christmas has always been one of my favorite Christmas Stories for Adults. It is written by John Grisham, and is semi autobiographical. It is not his typical books about law and courts ( which I also love), but is about a family that decides to Skip Christmas. The book was made into the movie Christmas with the Kranks, starring Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis. I highly recommend both!
5 Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
I love the story of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer by Thea Feldman. It has so many wonderful themes that can bring up good conversations with children. It is taken from the classic Christmas Movie shown for over 50 years. And of course, you can always sing the song, and act out the story with your family as well.
6 A Vintage Christmas
This wonderful collection of stories from authors such as Louisa May Alcott and Charles Dickens share Christmas Stories from times past. Stories and poems fill the pages, and bring the reader back to a simpler time. These are wonderful stories to enjoy while sitting near the fire and sipping hot cocoa, or reading to older children.
7 A Christmas Carol
This classic from Charles Dickens is a young readers edition, so quite easy to breeze through for an adult, but great to enjoy with younger readers as well. In grade school I was in this play so it has always held a special place in my heart. The story is timeless, and shares a great message with kids and adults alike about how important our actions are to those around us.
8 The Dawning of Joy Indestructible
This book written by John Piper focuses on the advent season. It has 25 readings that specifically guide the reader to thoughts surrounding the Advent of Christmas. And, of course, all that it brings to us. When I was young our family always celebrated advent, and read a nightly reading together while lighting the advent calendars. It was a great way to stop and reflect in the middle of a busy season, what the true meaning of Christmas is all about.
9 How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Okay, I have a little bit of mixed emotions about How the Grinch Stole Christmas. First I must admit, it is a total classic. Second, it has a great story line, and a really good ending. But the challenge is….the Grinch totally freaked me out as a kid. He is a Grinch and kind of scary. Recently my 4-year-old granddaughter brought a stuffed Grinch to my house, who she adorably calls, “Mr Grench”.
She told me the story of Mr Grench. How we all need to work to ensure that our heart is red and not black. That we should be careful because people’s hearts don’t turn black all at once, She said their heart turns dark a little at a time until there is no red left in it. So, okay, for that reason alone, I am including How the Grinch Stole Christmas on the list, and of course will sit and watch it with my granddaughter, and read the book to her as well. 🙂
10 A Charlie Brown Christmas
Any list of Great Christmas Books would be incomplete without A Charlie Brown Christmas. Originally made famous as a Christmas TV Special. A Charlie Brown Christmas is the perfect mix between secular and spiritual Christmas. It tells the Bible story right out of Luke, but also shares all of the other aspects of Christmas. We learn about how to get a long better, take care of others, and enjoy what really matters by spending time with Charlie Brown.
