Have You Ever Been Connected to Someone by an Invisible Thread?
What would you do if a young child asked you for spare change as you were rushing through your day? What if he really needed it? Let’s say he was only 11, then what? What if he was hungry? That is the experience of Laura Schroff in meeting 11-year-old Maurice. At first, she rushed past him, but then she went back. She then took him out to lunch at a McDonalds. They shared a lunch and then continued to share lunch every Monday for almost 3 years and a beautiful friendship blossomed.

How I learned about An Invisible Thread
A few years ago I attended a conference focused on ending childhood food insecurity put on by the charitable organization, No Kid Hungry. You can read more about my thoughts on
No Kid Hungry in my
blog post here. One of the keynote speakers was Laura Schroff and she shared that she believed there was an invisible thread that connected everyone we come in contact with. She referenced the Chinese Proverb, “An invisible thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, and circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle. But it will never break”. She was a captivating speaker and her story immediately captured my heart.
Invisible Thread Quote
The story continues as Laura builds an unlikely relationship with Maurice. They were from two completely different worlds, yet connected. The book, An Invisible Thread, by Laura Schroff and Alex Tresniowski, follows the continuing ups and downs of Laura and Maurice’s unlikely friendship, It is a must-read and is the type of book you cannot put down once you pick it up. The first time I read it, I picked it up at an airport and completely finished it before arriving home. It is captivating not only because it is such a peculiar story, but because it subtly calls the reader to look for the opportunities that they have to change their life and the lives of others. The reader is called to keep their heart open so that when an invisible thread might start to tug, they will heed the call, and answer the connection. The book did this for me.
But there is More…
Last week I was surfing Amazon for various books and found another book, Angels on Earth, also written by Laura Schroff and Alex Tresniowski. The book is subtitled, Inspiring Real-Life Stories of Fate, Friendship, and the Power of Kindness. Angels on Earth is a collection of 30 short stories. These are the stories that have been shared with Laura Schroff over the years following the release of her book An Invisible Thread. The Book will touch your heart and inspire you to do more. To keep trying, to move forward and touch someone’s life. I highly recommend both books and would suggest reading some of the stories to your family.
What will you do?
I recently published a
30 Day Giving Challenge which you can read more about here. In my original post, I give loads of ideas for spending a month focusing on Giving. With that in mind, I want to issue the challenge to you to do something. Stop right now, right down a list of what you will do, and do it. Maybe you will decide that the next person who reaches out and asks for financial help, you will give it to them. Or, maybe it will be something as simple as making eye contact with everyone who serves you the next time you go to a restaurant. It could be that you choose to truly engage with a few people on social media. Or, possibly, just taking time to go next store and meet your neighbors.
An Invisible Thread and Angels on Earth. Two of my favorite books.
Whatever your heart leads you to do, is something. It has value, and it will make a difference in someone’s life. But even moreover, it will make a difference in your life. When we give, we are always changed for the better. We grow, we see the world differently, and we become part of something bigger than ourselves. So, what will you do? Share in the comments below or
on Instagram.
