Easy Snack Idea- Hot Chocolate Munch!
We have our family over a few times a month, and when we all get together there are quite a lot of us! I love to have a snack on hand that we can munch on before dinner, while playing board games, or just while chatting. Sometimes the snack is a veggie tray and dip, sometimes a hot pan of fresh popcorn, and sometimes chips and salsa. But, at this special time of year, I like to dress it up, and make something festive and fun as well as yummy! So, today I am sharing my Hot Chocolate Munch Mix!
If you have been following me for a while, you will remember I shared my Pumpkin Spice Munch in September which you can find here, and my Leprechaun Munch which I shared last March which you can find here. You might be more familiar with the terms Puppy Chow, Chex Mix, or Muddy Buddies. I love this basic concept and enjoy creating whatever flavor goes with the season or holiday we are currently in. It is so versatile and easy to make, and my family loves it!

Why I love this Hot Chocolate Version
I think it is fun to add various holiday candies to this version, and of course, serve it in mugs to add to the festive fun! This year, I served it in my antique Santa Claus mugs. I remember having hot cocoa at my Grand parent’s house growing up in these mugs. My Grandma would always make hot cocoa on the stove using whole milk and Ovaltine. It tasted so rich and delicious, and it was made with lots of love.
The mugs were around since my Mom’s childhood and are now too delicate to use for hot beverages, but the memories are still intact. Every year I pull this set of mugs out and place them in the hutch so that I can think of all the wonderful Christmas’s of my childhood, and remember good times and days filled with people that I love. I know they will never be used again for hot chocolate, but the memories will always be there.
I added Candy Kisses and Holiday M & M’s to this munch as well as two types of marshmallows! You can add any of your favorite candies, and of course, crushed candy canes would make it Hot Peppermint Chocolate Munch! Hmmm, that sounds good for January!
Hot Chocolate Munch
This recipe is a tasty treat and perfect for snacking during the holidays or anytime! The scent of Hot Chocolate, the crunch of the Chex, and the sweetness of the marshmallows make this Munch the perfect snack!
Ingredients
- 1.5 Cups White Baking Chips
- 1.5 Cups Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips
- 1 Cube Butter 1/2 Cup
- 9 Cups Rice Chex Cereal
- 1.5 Cups Powdered Sugar
- 3/4 Cup Hot Cocoa Mix In Powdered Form
- 2 Cups Mini Marshmallows
- 1 Cups M & M's Red and Green Holiday
- 2 Cups Hershey Kisses Holiday in Red, Green, and Silver
Instructions
-
Melt Butter and Chips together in Microwave safe glass bowl for 15 seconds at a time on high. Mix between each 15-second segment. It usually takes about 4-6 sessions to melt depending on your microwave wattage.
-
Pour Chex Mix into the melted chocolate mixture and gently fold until all is covered.
-
Pour half of the Powdered Sugar and Hot Chocolate Mix into a Gallon sized Ziplock Bag. Mix it until combined. Then scoop half of the Chex Mix into the bag and fluff the bag around until the Chex are completely covered in powder. Then do the same process with the second half of Chex Mix and reserved Powdered Sugar and Hot Chocolate Mix.
-
Pour the coated Chex pieces into a serving bowl and pour in the M & M's, Hershey's Kisses, and Marshmallows. You can include any other favorite holiday candy as well!
Serve in mugs or bowls. Store any leftover Munch Mix in an airtight container.
This Hot Chocolate Munch is so easy to make, and so tasty to enjoy! Last year my sister made a similar version, tied it in baggies with ribbon, and put it in everyone’s stockings! It also makes a great gift for teachers, neighbors, or postal workers! You can put it in a tin or mason jars, tie a ribbon on it, and your gift is ready! It also makes a great snack for watching the game on weekends, or to take to potlucks!
